Ashburn

Located 30 miles northwest of Washington D.C, Ashburn, Virginia is the internet capital of the world. 70% of all internet traffic passes through Ashburn. The town is host to a number of server farms and as a result, there are plenty of IT jobs in the area.

Ashburn was originally known as Farmwell, named after a nearby mansion at the time. A portion of Farmwell became Ashburn Farm, which in turn lent its name to the town. During the civil war, Ashburn was under siege by the Union Army. While the Union was attacking, two soldiers, Matter and Harlow, smuggled in onions and tobacco to the confederates, who were able to use the supplies to survive the assault. To this day, Matter and Harlow are considered the reason the town was saved.

Part of Loudoun County, Virginia, Ashburn has a population of about 45,000 residents. Located within the Dulles Technology Corridor, Ashburn is home to many high-tech businesses. Verizon has a major office located in Ashburn, and government contractor Telos has their home office there as well. It is also the center for Amazon Web Services’ us-east-1 region of cloud computing resources.

Ashburn Park

Ashburn Park, located in Loudoun County, consists of 16 acres for Ashburn residents to relax, unwind and have fun. The park has a creek, nature trails, pavilions and picnic areas, as well as a playground for children to explore. In addition to Ashburn Park, Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park contains a 45 mile long paved trail, for Ashburn residents to walk, run or bike along. The trail runs from Purcellville in Loudoun County to Shirlington in Arlington County. In addition to the paved trail, there is also an adjacent bridle path for horseback riding which runs from Vienna, Fairfax County to Purcellville.
