Fairfax

The city of Fairfax is an independent city located in Virginia. The city itself is an enclave which is in turn surrounded by Fairfax county. Together, these two areas make up the collective area known simply as Fairfax. The city of Fairfax has a number of means of transportation to and from the Washington DC area. To the south of the city, in Fairfax county sits George Mason University, the largest public school in the commonwealth of Virginia, which oversees the education of over 35,000 students every year.

Fairfax grew exponentially in the 1960’s, going from a population of 2,000 to 13,500 in the course of ten years. Since then, the population has steadily increased, with the current number of residents at about 25,000. Fairfax has a good blend of residents of all ages, with no one demographic outnumbering another. As such, Fairfax, Virginia is a suitable location for all types of people, from all walks of life. In fact, Forbes rated Fairfax as one of the top 3 places to live well in 2009, citing Fairfax’s excellent public school system, high median salary and vast amount of small businesses in the area, which makes it the ideal environment to live in during a recession.

Fairfax Schools

Fairfax, Virginia is known in part for its excellent public school system, which are known as some of the best schools in the country. Primary and secondary schools in Fairfax include Fairfax High School, Lanier Middle School, Daniels Run Elementary School, Providence Elementary School, and Fairfax Academy. Being the largest university in Virginia, George Mason University stands as the college of choice for the residents of Fairfax. Notable programs at the university include creative writing, law, economics, computer science and business.

There are also a number of non secular schools not owned by the city for those seeking a more unique educational experience. Fairfax Festivals

Fairfax, Virginia is home to a number of festivals and community activities throughout the year. Many of these events attract high numbers of visitors from out of town, which help stimulate the economy and make Fairfax an important destination for residents of the Virginia / Washington DC area year round. These festivals include the Annual Chocolate Lovers Festival, held in the heart of Old Town Fairfax in early February, Fairfax Civil War Day, which is a civil war reenactment held in the spring, as well as Fairfax Spotlight on the Arts, a three week long art festival with dance and choral performances throughout.

Fairfax also hosts National Trails day in June, a city-wide Independence Day celebration which includes a parade and evening activities, an Irish Festival in September, a Fall Festival in October, held in Old Town Fairfax, as well as a Fall For The Book Festival, which invites authors to read and exhibit their works for book lovers to enjoy. Fairfax also hosts a local Holiday Craft Show at Fairfax high school, and the Festival of Light and Carols in December. No matter the time of year, there’s always something going on in Fairfax for residents to enjoy.
